Practice - Relative Clauses - Basic - Review

Now we are going to review the basic relative clause structures. Note that these are A2 contents, so you should not have any problems with it. Just watch the video, sit back and relax! Listen first and then listen again reading along with the script at the bottom of the page.

 

Remember: Who is used when the antecedent is a person. That is used to refer to either a person or things. Which is used to refer to anything except people.

Question #1

The correct answer is A) who. People who live in straw houses shouldn’t light matches. The answer is “who” because the sentence is referring to people.

Question #2
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, ____was written in the late 19th century, remains a popular book among adventurous Americans.
A) who
B) which
C) that

The correct answer is B) which. “Which” is the correct answer because it introduces non-essential clauses such as in this case: “was written in the late 19th century.”

Question #3
She prefers to watch movies ____ make her laugh.
A) who
B) which
C) that

The correct answer is C) that. The correct answer is “that” because it introduces an essential clause. As you can tell there are no commas that set off additional information in this sentence.

Question #4
William bought all the books ____ are required for Spanish class.
A) who
B) which
C) that

The correct answer is C) that. “That” is also used because it refers to the books that are required for Spanish class. It does not refer to William because he is not required for Spanish class.

In the crowd were several coaches ____ are regarded as excellent prospects for a college career.
A) who
B) which
C) that

The correct answer is A) who. “Who” is correct because the sentences refers to the coaches who are people.

The police were able to find evidence against her, ____ surprised everyone who knows her well.

C) that

The correct answer is B) which. “Which is the correct answer because the latter part of the sentence is non-essential information. It is not vital to the sentence.
